David Mitchell's 2010 novel set in 18th Century Japan. The novel centers on a young Dutch man's adventure in Japan, during which he falls in love with the midwife Orito Aibagawa, who is later sent off to live as a nun in a secretive temple at the top of Mount Shiranui.
The main character, Jacob de Zoet, encounters Dr. Marinus while stationed on Dejima (the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki, Japan). Dr. Marinus also appears in Bone Clocks, Slade House and Utopia Avenue.
